Please note that these distances are guidelines for training purposes. Actual distances will depend on your horse’s stride length and factors such as weather and the surface you are riding on. As the obstacles get higher, the distances will need to be adjusted accordingly.
- For horses: The distance between trotting poles is usually between 1.20 and 1.40 meters . This provides sufficient space for a normal trotting gait.
- For ponies: The distance is between 0.80 and 1.10 meters , depending on the size of the pony and its stride length.
The distances between canter poles vary depending on the type of horse, the length of their stride, and the purpose of the training. Here are general guidelines:
For horses:
- Loose canter poles : approximately 3 to 3.5 meters between the poles.
- Series of canter poles : 3 meters of distance is usually ideal for an average canter.
- Distances for a shorter or collected gallop : 2.75 to 3 meters.
For ponies:
- Loose canter poles : approximately 2.5 to 3 meters between the poles.
- Series of canter poles : approximately 2.5 meters .
- Collected gallop : around 2.25 to 2.5 meters.
